Our spy photographers have just sent us the first images of Subaru's next-generation 2015 Outback wagon undergoing shakedown testing in southern California.
On sale since 2009, the current Outback wagon will be replaced sometime next year with an all-new model. Although still covered in heavy camouflage, it is clear the 2015 Outback will aim a little more up-market than the current car.
On the styling front, the new Legacy-based Outback will ditch its somewhat chunky design cues in favor of a sleeker look. The prototype spotted today appears to feature a steeply raked front windshield and more streamlined projector headlamps. The car's hood will also have two pronounced character lines.
However, the Outback won't totally lose its design roots as off-road style rocker panels, lower grille and roof racks are clearly visible.
Our spies managed a quick look inside the 2015 Outback, revealing a twin-binnacle gauge cluster, new HVAC vents and a thick-rimmed sports steering wheel complete with paddle shifters.
Overall we'd say Subaru is gunning for a more premium position for the new Outback, especially considering the car was seen testing alongside an Audi allroad.
Base version of the 2015 Outback will likely be powered by Subaru's 2.5L four-cylinder, while up-level versions will use the 2.0 turbo mill found under the hood of the new Forester. Subaru might not offer the new Outback with its 3.6L six-cylinder engine, but a diesel-hybrid could eventually join the mix.
Look for the 2015 Subaru Outback to debut at the 2014 Detroit auto show, with sales set to commence before the end of 2014.
